Support Rocks!
Living here in Triathlon Country, it’s impossible to miss the fact that the season is upon us. Throngs of dedicated cyclists edge the highway from Penticton to Osooyos and around the loop to Apex Mountain and Twin Lakes; capped and goggled swimmers crawl like ants from the Giant Peach to the SS Sicamous and back, and early morning runners are puffing their way all around town before the heat and the burgeoning volume of tourists make things too uncomfortable. It’s a non-stop demonstration of commitment, and I love it. My own line-up of summer Sprint Triathlons starts this weekend in Vernon. I had a moment during training last week that I’d love to share with you. We were just getting out of the pool, my training partner and I, and she dropped a rock out of her gym bag. Bending over to pick up the smooth stone, she smiled. It was her gratitude rock; one she carries with her to remind her of all the things she’s thankful for. “So, what are you grateful for?” she asked me. Having just completed an early morning swim that I’d have been challenged to get myself out of bed for if it weren’t for the vow we’d made to each other, the answer was easy. “You” I replied. Knowing someone is counting on us, cheering for us, holding us accountable for what we say we want and what we say we’ll do makes it that much easier to deliver. A support system is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves.
So what are the best ways to build that support around ourselves?
- Be clear about what you want. It’s easier to find others on the same path if we know what path we want to be on!
- Be true to your P’s and V’s (principles and values). If you know what’s important to you (for me it’s creativity, courage, clarity and commitment) you’ll naturally begin to attract the people, experiences and dreams that are a fit for you. You’ll keep your P’s and V’s in mind when identifying the people and experiences that you want to bring into your life, and identifying the ones that aren’t really serving you.
- Join related groups and associations. Where do the people who share your passions and interests gather? Are there weekly or monthly meetings? Dedicated chat rooms or gathering spots? Seek them out. You’ll be amazed at the renewed focus and energy, not to mention the insider’s tips you’ll glean from spending time with like-minded folk.
- Let the world know! Take a page from the net-worker’s handbook. The more people who know about your interests and dreams, the greater the likelihood of finding just the right support team for you. When they meet someone who would be a good connection for you they’ll point it out, but only if they know what you’re looking for.
Be a support to those around you. Hold other’s accountable for what they say they’ll do. Ask them about the progress on the initiatives they told you about. Cheer them on. Do it because it makes you and them feel great and it inspires targeted action. The happy side-benefit is that the more positive support you offer others, the more will come back to you in kind.

Okanagan Sketchbook in Penticton Business & Lifestyle
Thanks for all the wonderful comments on the Hawaii Sketchbook I included in last month's newsletter. Also in last month's newsletter I mentioned Dan Albas's new business magazine, Penticton Business & Lifestyle. Next month those two worlds will join together. Penticton Business & Lifestyle will be featuring a monthly 'Okanagan Sketchbook' page by yours truly! It's an honour for me to get to be involved in such a great publication, and to be able to share my sketches of this amazing place. This is even better than getting my drawings up on Mom's fridge (although that's always good too). |

Unstoppable! by Cynthia Kersey
Unstoppable is a collection of 45 stories of perseverance and triumph from 'people just like you'. It comes complete with an action plan. Perfect summer reading, it's an inspiration coach that you can carry with you in your beach bag. I think I had a little tear in my eye before the end of the first story. |
